FAQs Answer #2
Q: What is a Main Distribution Frame
A Main Distribution Frame (MDF) is the central connecting point for cabling. It also serves as the main location from which cross connecting and testing are done. The MDF has separate voice and data trunks and systems, common local horizontal service and trunks generally connected to systems.
An MDF typically consists of racks with Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and Optical Fiber patching. This is the interface for connections between Horizontal and Backbone, or vertical cabling.
Optical Fiber patch panels are used wherever horizontal and / or vertical cables are terminated for connection to active equipment or interconnection between floors. In many cases, wall mounted fiber interconnect units provide the necessary storage and protection for valuable optical systems.
