FAQs Answer #16
Q: What is the difference between serve shields and braid shields?
A serve shield is consists of multiple conductors wrapped helically around the cable interior. Braid shields have individual conductors or groups of conductors interwoven or braided, in opposite directions and woven together (two over, two under) like a basket, around the cable interior. Serve shields can open up when the cable is bent and are most effective at low frequencies and are typically used in audio applications. Braid shields provide more consistent coverage and do not open up. they are most effective at low and RF frequencies at which point they are combined with foil or another braid to extend their usefulness into VHF, UHF, and Microwave frequencies. The braid has better electrical performance and greater pulling strength.
